Plastic, Metal or Glass? What Kind of Cosmetic Packaging Do You Choose?

Cosmetic packaging materials play a very important role in the cosmetic industry. Cosmetic packaging is like a person's face to cosmetics. Outstanding appearance can quickly catch people's attention, and even drive the sales boom of cosmetics. There are various materials for packaging cosmetics. Different types of products also have fixed packaging traditions in application. Nail polish packing bottles are glass, or packaging for creams and facial cleanser packaging tubes are made of plastic.

Cosmetic packaging uses a wide range of materials, including plastics, metals, glass, composites, paper, rubber, ceramics, enamels and others. Listed below are several types of commonly used cosmetic packaging materials and their pros and cons.

Plastic Packaging for Cosmetics

Plastic is the most commonly used packaging material. Materials are divided into polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), acrylonitrile-butanediol Ethylene-styrene (ABS) and ethylene glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG), etc.

The material of plastic bottle is usually PP, PE, K material, AS, ABS, acrylic, PET, etc. PET material is an environmentally friendly material with high barrier properties, light weight, non-breaking properties, chemical resistance, and strong transparency. It can be made into pearlescent, colored, magnetic white and transparent. It is often used in gel water bottles.

The acrylic material is an injection-molded bottle, which has poor chemical resistance. Generally, the paste cannot be directly filled, and it needs to be equipped with an inner tank to block it. It is not easy to fill it too much to prevent the paste from entering between the inner tank and the acrylic bottle, so as to avoid cracking. During transportation, the packaging requirements are high, because it looks particularly obvious after scratches, has high permeability, and has a thick upper wall. Its price is quite expensive. Acrylic lip gloss tubes are a common acrylic packaging.

Most of the injection-molded products include cosmetic cream containers, bottle caps, bottle stoppers, gaskets, pump heads, etc. with thicker walls for cosmetic containers. Lotion bottles and washing bottles with thin container walls are blown bottles.

Elastic containers for cosmetic products are lightweight materials with lower prices. It has the advantages of excellent physical properties, good chemical stability, simple and diverse processing and molding, good printing and decoration properties, and high impact resistance and strength. These advantages make it more and more widely used, and it takes the lead in the competition of cosmetic packaging materials. In addition, the outstanding appearance of plastic tube packaging for cosmetics helps it become more attractive in terms of packaging.

Metal packaging for cosmetics

At present, the cosmetic metal packaging materials on the market are mainly aluminum, which are often used in lipsticks, powder cakes and other products. The market has certain limitations, the amount of use is small, and the packaging of pure metal is becoming less and less. The combination of metal and plastic packaging forms more in the public eye. Cans and tubes are more common in cosmetic packaging, such products include aluminum jars for cosmetics, aluminum spray bottles and aluminum lotion bottles.

Glass packaging for cosmetics

Glass is a traditional packaging material, mainly used for products with smaller capacity such as creams, ointments, lotions, essences, essential oils, and nail polishes. Cosmetics with a capacity of more than 200ml rarely use glass packaging materials. According to the type of bottle mouth, glass bottles are divided into wide mouth bottles and narrow mouth bottles. Wide-mouthed bottles are generally used for solid cream cosmetics such as creams and smear-type masks. Narrow-mouth bottles are generally used for water and emulsion cosmetics. Amber glass jars are used for bath and body products that usually don't have a clear color.

Due to the advantages of inertness, impermeability, transparency and beauty, glass packaging occupies an important position in the high-end cosmetics market such as perfume. But the disadvantage is that it is heavy, easy to break, and inconvenient to transport, which restricts its mainstream position in the market.
